Romero, 27, was vice-captain last season alongside James Maddison. Now, he takes the armband into a new campaign, fresh from a Europa League win and 100 appearances for Spurs.

Speaking in Udine, Thomas Frank said: “I had a good conversation with Cuti Romero, and he’s going to be our captain. He was honoured and happy. Leading this club is a huge responsibility — not just for the Super Cup, but the whole season. He has the qualities we need: leadership on the pitch, drive, and constant support for his teammates off it.”

Frank also wants a wider leadership group to support his skipper. He plans to name four to five senior players after the transfer window closes. The idea is to create more voices in the dressing room, keeping standards high both on and off the pitch.

Cristian Romero joined Spurs from Atalanta in 2021 after winning the Serie A Best Defender award for 2020/21. Since then, he has built a rock-solid partnership with Micky van de Ven at the back. That pairing was vital in last season’s European success.

For many fans, Romero’s aggressive but composed style makes him an ideal choice to lead Tottenham into a new era. The Argentina international has already proven he can deliver in big moments. Now, the question is whether he can lift Spurs to even greater heights as captain.
